Now Discord says it'll let developers self-publish games – and give them 90% of revenue

After Epic launched its own game story offering 88 per cent of revenue to developers, Discord has stepped into the fray, saying it’ll let developers self-publish games on its store in 2019 offering 90 per cent of revenue.

The war for the hearts and minds of PC gamers is hotting up, with Epic and now Discord taking on Steam, which has traditionally offered developers and publishers 70 per cent of revenue.

Discord is predominantly a chat app focused on video games, but it’s branched out in 2018 to sell some video games. It seems it wants to get stuck in even more in 2019, and given over 200 million people have used Discord, it may have a chance of making an impression.

“We talked to a lot of developers, and many of them feel that current stores are not earning their 30 per cent of th...

Heroes of the Storm pros vent sadness, anger after Blizzard kills game’s esports future

On Thursday evening, Blizzard Entertainment announced it was scaling back work on Heroes of the Storm, its cross-franchise MOBA, and moving developers from that game to other projects. While Blizzard said it would continue to work on the game and release new content, it was a clear sign that Heroes of the Storm will not be a priority for the company in 2019 and beyond.
For many fans of the game, however, it was the cancellation of the Heroes Global Championship for 2019 that hit hardest. Dropping the HGC — and the Heroes of the Dorm collegiate circuit — was a sign of no confidence in Heroes of the Storm as a viable esport.
People who made a living based on Heroes of the Storm, including players, streamers, team owners and commentators, say they feel blindsided and betrayed by the ...

UK union wants to tackle video game industry crunch

Excessive and unpaid overtime, zero-hour contracts and a pervasive culture of homophobia and sexism – these are the three top issues to be tackled by a new video games industry branch of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB).

The new union branch, Games Workers Unite, will be the first of its kind in the UK – despite the fact the video games industry is one of the country’s fastest-growing sectors, with approximately 47,000 people now involved.

Now is a great time for this in particular after the spotlight was recently shone on the working practices at Red Dead Redemption 2 developer Rockstar Games, which employs hundreds of people in the UK.

As part of Eurogamer’s investigation into Rockstar’s crunch culture, I spoke with numerous people at Rockstar Lincoln, a stud...

Netflix’s Sabrina holiday special is caught in limbo

After dropping a 10-episode debut season in October, Santa (and Netflix) delivered a gift for fans of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. “A Midwinter’s Tale,” the series Doctor Who-like holiday special, brings us back to the town of Greendale, in the days leading up to two very important holidays for the residents: the Winter Solstice for the witches and Christmas for the mortals.
But while the juxtaposition of the cheery traditional celebrations and the Spellman family’s occult holiday makes for amusing moments, the special serves as a bridge between what we’ve seen and where the show is ultimately going in season two. The answers aren’t totally satisfying.
[Ed. Note: This contains spoilers for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina through “A Midwinter’s Tale.”]
